Through My Looking Glass

Photo AlbumPhotography on a Mood Swing Mar 4, '08 10:20 AM
for everyone

“I take photographs with love, so I try to make them art objects. But I make them for myself first and foremost - that is important.” - Jacques-Henri Lartigue

If mood swing could be captured in a photograph, then I perhaps just demonstrated on this trip lots of terrible emotions. And you will notice if I am not in the right mood I don't take a lot of pictures.

Ilocos of December 2007. Paolo reminded me of an old challenge: to capture the artistry of these three old places: Manila Bay, Intramuros, and Vigan. And I guess the idea was to discover your own magic in the most photographed places. Mood swing was just too overwhelming at the time, I ended up not liking my overall output.

Well I somewhat tried. At least to find my art...to grasp something new in me in an old place never forgotten.

Below is a photograph which I can say a great part of ME from this continuous discovery of an art I call my own.

I can relate to you. When I am in sour mood, I usually produce totally useless shots... :p

yup, you can make me click the shutter but i ended up getting frustrated all the more. i noticed during this trip, i feel like i need a somewhat personal space with the place - finding a connection, before i could capture it. i think its the search for the story i always look for. dramatic isn't it? but at least i realized for me to get a nice picture that i personally like is enough. :)

It's just the opposite with me. To simply pick up my camera starts the juices flowing, and elevates my mood. But,then, I am seldom in a sour mood and when I find myself there, get out of it. I truly believe that Abraham Lincoln was correct when he said that "most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be."

It seems self-defeating to "think" too much about art. To do it well we must be out of our minds.

To do it well is not a question. It should be an instinct once you hold the camera in your hands. But I remember this quote I read somewhere - there is a big difference between taking a picture and taking a photograph.
